Cold fracture

Manifestation: Material separation, which occurred in the cold condition as the stresses in the area of elastic deformations in the casting, were larger than the strength of the material. Stresses can occur due to uneven cooling conditions (differences in wall thicknesses). Special design of the casting can prevent contraction. –shrinking onto the cores. Typical characteristics: Different to hot tear, metallographic examination of a cold fracture shows that residual melt does not penetrate the crack opening. Preferred defect locations: - on sudden steep changes in wall thicknesses. - at wall thickness transitions with too small radii - at openings with or without too small radii (in assembly openings, etc.) Possible confusion/mistaken defect identification: None Remedial measures: - Design appropriate for the stresses, adjust cross-sections with large differences in wall thicknesses - Stresses caused by cooling can be determined using simulation and reduced by changing the design Sorry, there is no photo for this defect |
